If you are just considering purchasing a domain name then there are a couple factors to consider in choosing the right name. Simple tips to get that perfect domain name.

1) Is your business name available?

2) Is the .COM extension available?

3) Keep it short

4) Is it memorable?

5) Does the domain help common searches?

6) Multiple domains

s your business name available?

A lot of web traffic will come from people simply knowing your business name. Chances are you are not a new business and the local and surrounding areas know your business name. And chances are someone else has already registered a domain under the same business name. But, check to see if your full business name is available. If it is, Perfect!

Is the .COM extension available?

When going through the domain registering process you will see that if the .COM is unavailable it will recommend purchasing the .ORG or .US or .BIZ, as it is still available. But, it's the .COM you want. The internet was started with the DOT COM name drilled into our heads. It is so common that people will almost assume a domain name ends in .COM. If your .COM version IS available grab it. A close second would be the .NET version, but be careful as to what the .COM version holds. Type in the web address to your browser and see what's there. Sometimes it might be an information site, competing business and sometimes a website you would hate your customers to arrive at thinking they were visiting you! Case in point, a particular business name was available with .NET, but upon checking the .COM version the website loaded with x rated material and links.

Keep it short

Nobody wants to type in www.abcdefghijlkmnopqrstuvwxyz.com everytime they want to visit your site. Keep it short and simple. A great deal of traffic comes from directly entering your domain name. Also, consider that 3 out of 4 people come to a website after seeing it in traditional advertising; print, TV, radio, business card, etc...

Is it memorable?

If you happen to secure your busiiness name for a domain, then you're set. If not, consider a catch phrase your business uses for advertising, or adding your City or State to the domain. Obscure spellings or word combinations might seem OK, but if you have to spell the domain to someone then maybe a better alternative is available.

Does the domain help common searches?

This is a back burner point to consider. If all other options are unavailable, consider how people search and how search engines rank sites. Search engines will give slightly more weight to a site if the domain matches the search phrase and the content matches the domain words. Example, when you search on Google, look at the Bold text that matches your search phrase also notice how the domain names are also Bold for your particular phrase. There are various free tools to help with seeing how people search and the volume of searches.

Multiple domains to one website

If you have multiple domains, maybe a long business name domain, catch phrase doman, shorter business name or whatever. Use certain domains to track your offline advertising. You can have multiple domains pointing to your website. Just use the contact button above for more info.
